Description: Astaxanthin, recognised as a dark-red pigment and found in seafoods (such as salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans), is a keto-carotenoid. It belongs to a larger class of chemical compounds known as terpenes. Like many carotenoids, astaxanthin is a colorful, lipid-soluble pigment. And, it is naturally produced as part of the life cycle of Haematococcus Pluvialis.
In recent years, in vitro studies under specific laboratory conditions in seveal different and independent research groups have clearly and unequivocally indicated that Astaxanthin’s antioxidant properties are superior by 100-1000 times than that of other commercial carotenoids, as well as Vitamin E. Its antioxiidant properties, both as a quencher of singlet oxygen and a scavenger of free radicials, iss ability to protect lipids from peroxidation, and its dramatic effect on preventing DNA damage have been clearly demonstrated. The market for Astaxanthin focused on multiple products for the food, food-coloring, drinks, antiaging cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved astaxanthin as a food coloring (or color additive) for specific uses in animal and fish foods. The European Commission considers it food dye and it is given the E number E161j.Natural astaxanthin is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA.
